It was about an hour and a half of fireworks on my parents' building rooftop, and it was time well spent. My dad brought a bottle of hard cider and while it was hard to toast, I took a page from Kurt Vonnegut and said we should toast to public libraries and volunteer fire departments. We then drank the whole bottle, which helped the night pass.

There were fireworks, there was some actual lightning north of us I could glimpse through the clouds, there was some conversation between ourselves and other building residents. Not bad, as these things go. The downpour this afternoon cut short my plan to eat some hot dogs, as I've done on other Fourths of July, but the hot dogs can wait a few more days. Fireworks on the roof is something I'd rather keep from year to year.
